RWB Stephens Prize Competition

About the RWB Stephens Prize Competition

Elsevier, the publisher of the journal Ultrasonics, will again sponsor the RWB Stephens Prizes at the 2023 ICU BEIJING to be held in BEIJING, China. This competition honors the memory of Professor RWB Stephens (1902-1990) who was active in starting the Ultrasonic International (UI) conferences, and who contributed greatly to their success. During his lifetime, he was recognized as a great teacher who taught and inspired generations of students in acoustics and ultrasonics.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the presenters of up to five of the most outstanding papers (oral or poster) presented at the 2023 ICU BEIJING by a student or recent graduate (if the paper is based on the presenter's dissertation research) as determined by a panel of distinguished judges covering a broad diversity of ultrasonics topics. The chair of the Prize Committee is Prof Emeritus Wolfgang Sachse of Cornell University who was actively engaged with the ICU conferences as well as the journal Ultrasonics for many years.

Application

All entrants for the RWB Stephens Prizes should complete their application as follows:

    1.Send a note of intent to apply by August 1, 2023, via an e-mail to the Conference Organizer (2023icu@mail.ioa.ac.cn);

    2.Be a registered participant at the 2023 ICU BEIJING Registration desk by noon on Sunday, September 17th.

When applying please include the following information:

    1. Name of the entrant

    2. Title of the Paper

    3. Conference Paper Number

    4. Mentor or Faculty Advisor

    5. School or university where the research was carried out

    6. Date of diploma/degree or expected completion date

The total prize money is 1500 EUR. The awards will be announced at the conference Closing Ceremony on Thursday, September 21st.

ICU Early Career Award

The ICU Early Career Award will be presented to an individual who is relatively early in his/her professional career (about 10-15 years of active career), has been active in the affairs of ultrasound through his/her National Society, other National Society(ies), and/or regional or international organizations, and has contributed substantially to the advancement of theoretical and/or applied ultrasound by published papers.

Nominations for the award may be submitted by ICU Board Members and members of national or international scientific ultrasonic and/or acoustic societies. These nominations must include:

    1. One nominating letter,

    2. Two supporting letters,

    3. Professional facts document,

    4. Curriculum vitae.

These nominations are due to the Secretary-General of the ICU (currently Sigrun Hirsekorn via sigrun.hirsekorn@gmail.com) at least 3 months prior to the Congress. The documents must be submitted as pdf files via e-mail. The ICU Board will select the award recipient(s) by voting on the suggested candidates at the Board Meeting prior to the Congress.

The Award consists of an honorarium, the amount of which is to be determined by the ICU Board, an Award Certificate, and a Silver Whistle. The whistle is a silver-colored tri-tone Samba whistle with a strong overtone spectrum in the ultrasonic frequency range. The whistle symbolizes leadership in ultrasound.

The award will be presented at the banquet, a Plenary Session, or the Closing Ceremony of the Congress by the Chairman of the ICU Board. The award recipient will be introduced by an individual from the nominating institution and given the opportunity to make remarks in acceptance of the award.

 

C. F. Ying Award

Announcement of C.F. Ying Award for Young Ultrasonics Scholars

The Journal of Applied Acoustics in Chinese (JAA) is delighted to sponsor the prestigious C.F. Ying (Chongfu Ying) Award for young fellows in Ultrasonics at the upcoming 2023 International Congress on Ultrasonics in Beijing (The 2023 ICU BEIJING), China, with up to US$ 1600. This distinguished award aims to honor the memory of the esteemed Professor Chongfu Ying (1918-2011), an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a trailblazer in the field of Ultrasonics in China.

Professor C. F. Ying played a pivotal role in the establishment of Ultrasonics as a discipline in China, as well as the founding of the acoustical society of China (ASC), the Institute of Acoustics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IACAS), and the Journal of Applied Acoustics in Chinese (JAA). His remarkable contributions spanned diverse areas of Ultrasonics, including non-destructive testing (NDT) and evaluation (NDE), transducer behaviors, ultrasonic propagation in mediums like piezoelectric crystal, formation and human soft tissue, power ultrasound, laser ultrasound, acoustic cavitation, and more. The C.F. Ying Award will be determined by a panel of experts covering a broad diversity of ultrasonics topics. The chair of the Prize Committee is Prof. Hailan Zhang of the Institute of Acoustics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences who was actively engaged with the ICU conferences as well as the Journal of Applied Acoustics and the Chinese Journal of Acoustics for many years. The award will be presented to about 4 deserving individuals who are formally registered graduate students or young post-doctoral researchers under 40 years old. To be eligible, applicants must present their papers at the 2023 ICU BEIJING and demonstrate active involvement in ultrasound-related activities through their National Society, other National Society(ies), and/or regional or international organizations related to Ultrasonics and its Applications. Moreover, applicants should have made significant contributions to the advancement of theoretical and/or applied ultrasound through their published papers.

Additionally, applicants must be registered participants on-site at the 2023 ICU BEIJING Registration Desk by noon on Sunday, September 17th.

 

The C.F. Ying Award carries a cash prize of US$ 400, presented to each recipient (up to 4 awardees), along with an esteemed Award Certificate. The awards will be announced during the conference's Closing Ceremony on Thursday, September 21st.

Travel grants and others

Student Travel Grants

On a competitive basis, the 2023 International Congress on Ultrasonics in Beijing ( the 2023 ICU BEIJING) offers no more than 15 student travel grants (STG) to students who have registered and co-authored accepted abstracts for the conference. The 2023 ICU BEIJING will provide support with student travel grants to them to attend the meeting. These grants encourage participation by students who would normally find it difficult to attend. Women, minorities, undergraduate or beginning graduate students, and first-time ICU attendees, are especially encouraged to apply. Each 2023 ICU BEIJING sponsored grant is up to USD 400. No postdocs, faculty, or other senior research personnel may be supported by the grant. These student travel grants will enable them to share scientific information and stimulate research interests for students in the related field of ultrasonics.

 

APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY

1. Each applicant must be a Student Member or Graduate Student Society at the time he/she applies for the grant;
2. To be qualified for the funding from the STG, the awardee is required to attend the 2023 ICU BEIJING on the ground;
3. Each applicant must be a co-author of an accepted abstract or conference paper in the 2023 ICU BEIJING and present it physically at the conference;
4. Each applicant must be a full-time student registered toward a Bachelor, Master, or Ph.D. degree in a college or university when submitting the application;
5. During the expense reimbursement stage, the student applicants must show proof of having registered to attend the 2023 ICU BEIJING with their student ID.

 

HOW TO APPLY FOR A STUDENT TRAVEL GRANT
Applicants should create their application as a single PDF file, following the format described above. Go to the 2023 ICU BEIJING website and log in. Select the student travel grant option, and then submit the application.
 
WHAT TO SUBMIT
Please make sure to upload in the 2023 ICU BEIJING website all the required application materials: 
1. A support letter from the student's advisor (the advisor can directly submit the reference letter on the 2023 ICU BEIJING website). 
2. The applicant’s up-to-date resume including citizenship (required), if this is the first-time attendance of the ICU meeting or not, ethnicity, and gender (optional, used to broaden the participation of under-represented students).
3. A half-to-one-page letter from the student stating the purpose of attending the conference.
We remind you that students who are awarded a student travel grant must register and attend the conference on the ground.
 
IMPORTANT NOTES
Usually reimbursements will be made to grant recipients less than 30 days after the conference. More details will be provided to the students who are selected to receive a Student Travel Grant.
